Job Description:

McKinley Children’s Center is a highly respected child welfare organization, conveniently located near Los Angeles and Orange County in the city of San Dimas, with 4 other locations throughout Southern California. McKinley Children’s Center’s comprehensive array of programs and services - which touch nearly 1,500 lives annually - include Residential Treatment, Foster Care, Adoptions, Mental Health Services and Special Education. McKinley is nationally accredited, licensed by the California Department of Social Services and is certified by the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health. Our environment is highly therapeutic with many opportunities for activities with the children. Our beautiful 30 acre campus has a large covered outdoor basketball court, Olympic size pool, football/baseball field, play grounds, huge cafeteria, and a sports complex across the street which has baseball fields, tennis courts, and a running track.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

  1. Engage in the constant, professional supervision of children individually and in groups at all times and ensure milieu safety.

  2. Provide child care services

  3. Deployment, on an as needed basis, to meet milieu needs.

  4. Completion of Special Incident Reports as required

  5. Assist children in development of social, hygiene and other skills

  6. Assist each child working in a group and in handling individual problems

  7. Work within the day rehabilitation program and assist in the facilitating of rehab activities

  8. Administration of discipline and limit setting for behaviors.

  9. Attend all required orientation classes, training sessions and meetings as assigned.

  10. Participate in meaningful shift exchanges on both ends of a shift daily or when scheduled..

  11. Coordinate visitations with family members, as well as other appointments such as IEPs and medical appointments.

  12. Notation of child’s progress; identification of the possible need for professional services; communication of such findings to professional staff

  13. Complete all required documentation in a legible, professional manner.

  14. Supervise off-grounds excursions, including clothes shopping trips as assigned.

  15. Conduct all interactions with children and families with respect; mindful of treatment plans with extra attention to specialized plans.

  16. Provide crisis intervention including the use of physical restraints if needed.

  17. Provide behavior management assistance in the classroom as needed.

  18. Assist children in completing homework.

  19. Assist in the orientation and training of new residential counselors.

  20. Follow all medication distribution and documentation procedures.

  21. Participate in the agency’s Program Quality Improvement (PQI) plan as assigned.

  22. Ensure implementation of and compliance with any state, local, grant, contract, or licensure requirements.

  23. Execute agency policy & procedure appropriately.

  24. Appropriately handles all contacts with various groups, such as media, special interest advocates, the Board, and others.

  25. Serves as a role model in carrying out the mission of McKinley.

  26. Other related duties as assigned.

Experience and Skills:

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  1. 4 years relevant experience

  2. 60 units or AA Degree with 2 years of relevant experience required

  3. Non-relevant Bachelor’s Degree with 2 years of relevant experience preferred

  4. Relevant Bachelor’s Degree in Behavioral Science with 1 year relevant experience preferred

COMPUTER/OFFICE SKILLS REQUIRED:

  1. Word Processing; Excellent Writing Skills

  2. General Office Skills

PHYSICAL SKILLS REQUIRED:

  1. Must pass pre-employment physical exam, TB and drug screening

  2. Ability to commute to various sites on campus

  3. Ability to physically restrain children

  4. Ability to bend, stoop, kneel
